Over the past few months, I attended various training days and stud farms to learn about the sport of horse racing. These training days covered everything from how the horses breed and get taken care of on tips and tricks on how to bet. These training days were gearing us for the horse racing season which kicked off on the 3 December 2016.
We kicked off the Summer of Champions with the Fillies Guineas Grade 1 race day. On the race day, the Fillies ran over 1600 metres in total. Now for those of you that don't know what a Filly is, a Filly is a young female horse that is too young to be called a Mare or a female horse that is under the age of 4. The horse ran on equal terms (they all have to weigh the same amount), meaning they get to carry up to 60kgs in weights on their backs, this makes up for any differences in weight between the horses. This means that the best horse in each age group should win, best Filly of its class indicator.
The race day started out with in our Racing it's a rush section, we spent most of the day having drinks, placing bets and watching the races. Just after lunch, I watched a fashion show. What I love most about race days is that you get to dress up, place bets, chill and have drinks with some of your best friends and colleagues. I know that some of you are thinking, maybe it's not for me, but horse racing is for everyone and it's so much fun. All you do is take the elements that you like from it and enjoy it to the best of your ability.
On the day JUST SENSUAL was the winner, we also witnessed LEGAL EAGLE win the race just before in the Green Point Stakes which was also over 1600 metres, we should see him again for the Queen's Plate and/or The Metropolitan Stakes.
The next big race days are as follows and are not to be missed:
6 & 7 Jan – L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate
28 Jan – Sun Met celebrated with G.H. Mumm Champagne
25 Feb – Cape Town Prawn Festival
